Save Our Riverfront Bushland (SORB) ...In 1991 SORB became the first environment-focused community group to arise in the Centenary Suburbs in south-western Brisbane. SORB formed as a committee of concerned Centenary Suburbs residents as a result of a public meeting on 1 Sep 1991 held to express concern at the wide scale clearing of large tracts of remnant riverfront bushland in the south-western suburbs of Brisbane, just weeks prior to the enacting of Brisbane City Council's first vegetation protection laws. SORB's original objectives were to act for protection of remnant bushland, retention of public access to the Brisbane River riverfront, and adequate provision of public open space in the Centenary Suburbs. In 1993 SORB established Westlake-Riverhills Bushcare Group (WRBG), a community based bushcare group under the Brisbane City Council's Habitat Brisbane Program. As the first of many more bushcare groups now operating in the south-western suburbs of Brisbane, WRBG commenced its bushland rehabilitation work along Pullen Reach of the Brisbane River (refer map). In spearheading environmental action in south-western Brisbane, SORB led the way for several other local community environment groups to form in subsequent years, each with their own specific focus, including: 1996 - Centenary & District Environment Action (CDEA) 2005 - Friends of Pooh Corner 2008 - Wolston and Centenary Catchments (WaCC) SORB continues to work closely with these other groups, providing expertise in various technical areas, including research, submission-writing, mapping and GPS documentation.
Further background: The Centenary Suburbs is a group of outer suburbs of Brisbane (in the state of Queensland, Australia) which fringe the south side of the Brisbane River some 16km south-west of the Brisbane city centre. | |
